Are sink drains Biofilm-free?

We researched whether sink drains in intensive care units are biofilm-free. When reading the available scientific literature, we discovered the following facts.

62% of untreated drains

are contaminated by multi-resistant bacteria.
(Clin. Microbiol. Infect., 2021, Valentin et al.)

5 patients were infected

in an intensive care unit from a Swedish hospital within a period of seven months. The source of the outbreak was the sink drain hosting antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
(J. Hosp. Infection, 2012, Starlander et al.)

Droplets are dispersed

and attain up to 1,50 meters away departing from the sink drain.
(Am J Infect Control., 2022, Ofstead et al.)

A contaminated sink

results in the spread of micro-organisms towards nursing staff and patients.
(Infect. Control Hosp. Epidemiol, 2019, Hajar et al.)

Conclusion

There is an urgent need to develop effective means of prevention against the transmission of pathogens, including carbapenem-resistant micro-organisms, from drains to patients.

(Infect. Control Hops. Epidemiol, 2018, Carling PC)
